May 1854 marked the opening
of the first wire cable suspension aqueduct bridge in the world.
Built by John Augustus Roebling, it spanned the Allegheny River at
11th Street. It had 7 spans of 160 fee each, consisting of a
wooden trunk to hold water and supported by a continuous wire cable
on each side that was 7 inches in diameter.
