Pittsburgh, July 29, 2010 – State Sen. Wayne D. Fontana (D-Allegheny) today announced a community meeting for Wednesday, August 11th at 7 p.m. in Beechview to introduce residents of the community to their new grocer.

“I am absolutely thrilled that we have been able to secure a grocery for the neighborhood,” Fontana said. “Now that we have an agreement in place, it is time for the community to hear the details of the plan and have the opportunity to weigh in.”

Senator Fontana announced earlier this month that negotiations were underway with a potential grocer and representatives of the Urban Redevelopment Authority to replace the Foodland on Broadway Avenue that closed at the end of June. Those negotiations were productive and have resulted in a commitment from a new grocer.

“The company is excited about coming into Beechview,” said Fontana. “The grocery store has always been one of the central points of our community and an anchor for other businesses. I believe that the new store will have an opportunity to really flourish in Beechview. I hope that the community will continue to support their efforts and will patronize the establishment to thank them for their commitment to Beechview.”

The August 11th meeting will also include representatives of the Urban Redevelopment Authority who were integral in securing this commitment. The meeting will be held at McCann Hall in the St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Beechview. It is open to the public.
