BROOKLINE, March 6, 2012 – State Sen. Wayne D. Fontana today announced a series of seven free career workshops that will get underway on March 19.

The program “Skills for Success – The Fontana Series” is being presented by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh with funding secured by the senator.  Rachel Masilamani and Georgiana Deming are the presenters.  They have over 10 years combined experience assisting library visitors with job hunting, online applications and resume writing.

“The Skills for Success series was a success last fall and I am excited that it is returning,” Fontana said.  “There are employers out there looking for workers, but it is a very competitive environment.  Skills for Success provides attendees an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the job searching process while receiving personal feedback on resumes, cover letters and interview skills.  I have heard from individuals who attended last year and used the information presented to them to secure a new job.  The program works and can be of great assistance to individuals as they go through the job searching process.”

Joyce McGuire of Green Tree attended one of the sessions in October and within a month received two job offers. She accepted a new position with a local company.  “I chose to be open-minded and attend the program for any tips to gain employment and it changed my life,” said Ms. McGuire.  “The program has a lot of tools and helped me prepare and utilize my skills to pursue a career.”

Jerae Palmer of Pittsburgh landed a desired position within a few days of attending a session last fall.  “I’m calling to celebrate a success,” Ms. Palmer said.  “I moved a mountain – a big mountain – in a couple of days because I was so motivated when I left that class!”

Participants at the free workshops take part in mock interviews, develop job hunting strategies and networking skills and receive assistance with application packages.  Computer access, refreshments and materials are provided.  Individuals can register online at www.clpgh.org or by calling 412-281-7141, x 2012.
